Koch Network Pours Money Into Florida To Save Golden Boy Marco Rubio

September 7, 2016

Marco Rubio is the Koch network’s golden boy – the lackadaisical Florida Senator and failed presidential candidate was a top choice in the crowded Republican presidential primary, and some even resorted to public begging to convince him to run for reelection in Florida.

And now, just weeks before voters head to the polls, the Koch network is pouring huge amounts of money into Florida to save Rubio. This week alone, two Koch groups – the LIBRE Initiative and Americans For Prosperity – have launched ads for Rubio. In their first buy of the cycle, LIBRE is spending $700,000 on behalf of Rubio. Americans For Prosperity also launched a digital ad attacking Rubio’s opponent.

All in all, the Koch network has pledged to spend a whopping seven figures on behalf of Rubio to boost his reelection bid. After all, Rubio has bragged about his 100% lifetime rating for serving Koch interests, but he

The Kochs Just Sent Marco Rubio A Babysitter

February 23, 2016

An inspiration to all participation award recipients everywhere, Marco Rubio — who, remember, has yet to win a single state and won a mere 9 delegates to Donald Trump’s 68 — is teaming up with Charles and David Koch to bring their selfish agenda to the White House.

In the latest sign that the Kochs — like RNC Reince Priebus and the rest of the GOP establishment — are getting seriously nervous about Donald Trump, Politico reports that Marc Short, “the Koch brothers’ top political adviser in Washington and a trusted member of their inner circle for five years,” is jumping aboard Marco Rubio’s expectations-mangling presidential campaign.

Short’s Team Marco migration is a serious indication that Rubio’s surging ahead in the Koch Primary. But that’s hardly a surprise — there have for months been indications that Rubio’s a Koch favorite.

In the last weeks alone, we’ve seen Koch operatives jump to Rubio’s defense on social media, as […]

Marco Rubio Has Some Not-So-Secret Admirers In Koch World

February 8, 2016

Koch World is going crazy shilling for — and defending — Marco Rubio. Here are a few recent examples:

Executive Director at the LIBRE Initiative defends the Rubio Talking Point 3000.

President at Americans For Prosperity attacks Christie for criticizing Rubio.

Head of Corporate Communications at Koch Industries criticizes Bush and Christie for attacking Rubio.

A Concerned Veterans For America VP defends Rubio’s “record.”

By the look of it, senior staff at Koch front groups and business entities are running a full-blown pro-Rubio rapid response operation, pushing back on other candidates attacks and scrambling come up with something — anything — that the junior senator from Florida can claim as an “accomplishment.”

Here’s another indication that the Kochs are really feeling Rubio: Representatives from the pro-Rubio super PAC, Conservative Solutions PAC, last weekend held “private meetings” with Koch network donors at Charles and David’s winter […]

Marco Rubio’s Energy Plan Reads Like A Big Oil And Koch Wishlist

October 16, 2015

Today, Marco Rubio released his energy plan, promising to help American “take full advantage of our energy potential.” But his plan reads like a Koch Industries wishlist: Rubio pushes to end the oil export ban, build Keystone despite environmental concerns, and phase out the Renewable Fuel Standard.

In response to Rubio’s plan, American Bridge President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:

“Marco Rubio says his energy plan will bring the country into a the 21st century. However, the ever-absent senator’s policies aren’t original or groundbreaking. Rubio is advocating for outdated practices that would take us back decades in addressing climate change. Just like Jeb Bush and the rest of the GOP field, Marco Rubio’s plan promises to protect big oil and the Koch brothers, instead of growing clean energy and protecting the environment.”

Marco Rubio, LIBRE Team Up To Push The Koch Agenda

October 13, 2015

Today, Marco Rubio will participate in a town hall in Boulder City, Nevada organized by the Kochs’ so-called Latino outreach group, the LIBRE Initiative. LIBRE claims to advocate for policies that help Latinos, but in reality the group pushes for policies that help Charles and David Kochs’ bottom line.

In participating in LIBRE’s town hall, Marco Rubio is showing yet again that there’s only one thing he’s interested in — a piece of the $900 million the Kochs have said they’ll spend in this election. On issue after issue, Rubio’s been a strong supporter of the Koch agenda — opposing the Ex-Im Bank, fighting against net neutrality, blocking a raise to the minimum wage, opposing bankruptcy protections for Puerto Rico, and supporting tax cuts for rich special interests like the Kochs. Just this week, a new report revealed that Rubio could be the new “front-runner” for the billionaire brothers.

But by aligning himself with LIBRE, Marco Rubio is signaling that if […]

Marco Rubio Embraces The Koch Brothers’ Puerto Rican Priorities

September 4, 2015

Today, just hours before he headed to Puerto Rico, Marco Rubio sided with the billionaire Koch brothers in opposing the fair treatment of Puerto Rico under Chapter 9 of the U.S. Bankruptcy code.

For months, the Kochs have been using their network affiliated groups — 60 Plus, American Future Fund, Cato, and others —  to run a full court press lobbying campaign against access to Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection for Puerto Rico.

On the surface, the Koch network’s deep involvement in Puerto Rico’s financial crisis looks random and strange — but when you follow the money, no surprise, it centers on the Koch network’s bottom line.

In a recent report, “The Kochs’ Wealth Versus the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico,” Bridge Project exposed the Koch connection: Supporters of Charles and David Koch’s network stand to lose a lot of money should Puerto Rico be allowed to access Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection. It’s pure self-interest, not libertarian idealism.

A new, updated version of the […]

Marco Rubio: The Final Koch Puppet On The Koch Stage In Columbus

August 24, 2015

Expecting for Marco Rubio to make news as the last candidate at the Koch/AFP summit? Think again. Rubio is no novice to delivering his carefully crafted argument to his favorite constituency: Charles and David Koch.

As one of the five on the Kochs’ shortlist, Rubio has had many opportunities to show his deep allegiance to the Kochs “libertarian” causes in hopes they’ll spend part of the $900 million they said they’ll spend in 2016 on his campaign.

Recently, Rubio’s taken every potential opportunity he can to suck up to the Kochs, but just like every other candidate this weekend, his Koch ties run long and deep. Additionally, Rubio’s been a strong supporter of the Koch agenda — opposing the Ex-Im Bank, fighting against net neutrality, blocking a raise to the minimum wage, and supporting tax cuts for rich special interests like the Kochs.

In his relentless attempt to win over the Kochs, Rubio has completely disregarded that what’s good for the […]

Marco Rubio’s Koch candidate tryout

May 1, 2015

Next up … we have Marco Rubio auditioning to become the Koch brothers’ candidate in their shadow primary! Rubio is set to address the Koch brothers and their cronies at today’s Americans for Prosperity “Road to Reform” luncheon.

This is just the latest stunt by Rubio to suck up to the billionaire brothers. Last week, Rubio participated in a conference call, led by Americans for Prosperity, to push for the expiration of the Export-Import Bank, which is the Koch’s latest pet project. In tomorrow’s address, Rubio is set to call for regulation reforms that would likely protect the the fortune of billionaires — not the best interest of Americans.

This is the latest event in the Koch brothers’ invisible primary, where candidates are competing to win the blessing and the financial backing of the billionaires. Normally, the Kochs stay out of presidential primaries, but this year the Kochs are hedging their bets and selecting their […]

Marco Rubio, Ready for His Koch Close-Up

April 23, 2015

And so it begins… Just two days after Charles and David Koch announced the picks for their shadow primary, Marco Rubio, one of the five chosen ones, is eagerly jumping at the chance to audition.

According to NBC News, Rubio is participating in a conference call today with Koch-backed Americans for Prosperity to discuss the Export-Import Bank, which is the Koch’s latest pet project.

The Kochs have been working to kill off the Ex-Im Bank through several of their organizations, including AFP, Freedom Partners, and the LIBRE Initiative. No surprise that the billionaires’ crusade to end Ex-Im is highly hypocritical. While they say, “the government should not be picking winners and losers,” the truth is Koch Industries has been one of the winners and received up to $16 million in assistance from the program.

This isn’t the first time the Kochs have showered praise on Rubio for opposing the Ex-Im Bank and it’s […]

Kochs’ Latino Front Group Begins Express Advocacy for Rubio

September 7, 2016

The Koch brothers’ Latino front group, the LIBRE Initiative, is finally taking the plunge and calling for the direct election of Marco Rubio — an open act of partisan political advocacy that they’ve previously only done more subtly (i.e., without saying the magic “vote for” words). The Kochs must be nervous about their major investment (more than $5.4 million) in Rubio, who looks to be caught in the race of his life.

This is technically the first time LIBRE has spent money to help elect a candidate, though far from the first time the Koch brothers have used their billionaire donor network to help Republicans eager to do their bidding.

American Bridge Vice President Eddie Vale issued the following statement on the Kochs’ latest Rubio intervention:

“Investing millions into Marco Rubio’s political career, Charles and David Koch have painstakingly made a loyal foot soldier out of Rubio, who has, in turn, earned a […]

New Bridge Project Florida Report Highlights Kochs’ Rubio Love

September 2, 2016

With the Koch brothers’ Americans for Prosperity Defending the American Dream Summit in Orlando this weekend, Bridge Project is today releasing an updated Florida research report exposing the Koch brothers’ subversive political activities in the Sunshine State.

As ever, the Koch brothers will be promoting their selfish agenda and flaunting the loyal politicians they’ve bought-off to promote it.

Front and center on Saturday will be a Koch favorite: Marco Rubio, who the Kochs have admired for years. Charles and David Koch have painstakingly made a loyal foot soldier out of Rubio, who has earned a 100% lifetime rating from AFP — and the billionaires be doing everything they can to make sure they get their Florida man back in the Senate this fall.

American Bridge Vice President Eddie Vale issued the following statement on the release of Bridge Project’s latest report:

“Marco Rubio avoided Trump’s Republican Convention like the plague, but he is beyond eager […]

Rubio’s Re-Election Would Be A Win For The Kochs

June 23, 2016

The Koch network’s admiration of Marco Rubio is well documented. During the GOP presidential primary, the career politician was a top pick for Koch puppet-in-chief. With a presidential bid out of reach (for now), the Kochs’ best bet is to get one of their favorites re-elected to the Senate.

A spokeman for the Koch network, James Davis, also told The Hill that they would support his re-election:

“Sen. Rubio has been a strong leader in the Senate on a number of issues, including fighting against the [Export-Import] Bank and opposing wasteful spending increases.”

Yesterday, executive director of the LIBRE Intiative Daniel Garza was quick to tweet his excitement after Rubio announced his flip-flop. “The race for Senate in Florida just heated up. Welcome @marcorubio. Latinos to play major role in deciding this one.”

For months, Koch network leaders have been publicly praying for Rubio’s return to the Senate. American Commitment President Phil Kerpen tweeted in […]

Why Did Rubio Back Off Giving Puerto Rico Fair Access To Chapter 9 Bankruptcy?

December 21, 2015

The New York Times this weekend reported on the billion-dollar hedge fund and Koch brothers-led lobbying campaign to prevent Puerto Rico from receiving fair access to Chapter 9 bankruptcy. Included in the story was a detail on Marco Rubio’s abandonment of legislation that would’ve given Puerto Rico fair treatment under the law — by the sound of it, he just walked away.

Rubio came out publicly against fair access for Puerto Rico back in September, but this weekend’s Times story got the Tampa Bay Times — and us — wondering: “Why did Marco Rubio back away from the bill to help Puerto Rico?

It’s safe to say that his hedge fund backers and Charles and David Koch have something to do with it.

Rubio Spends Another Saturday Wooing The Kochs With One Of Their Political Front Groups

October 26, 2015

Marco Rubio isn’t voting in the Senate, raising money, or hitting the campaign trail but he is running on all cylinders to woo the Koch brothers and win the Koch primary with another stop today with one of the Kochs’ “constituency” groups.

This morning in South Carolina, Marco Rubio is doing a town hall with Koch front group Concerned Veterans for America.

Despite claiming to work for veterans, CVA pushes the Koch agenda first and foremost — that means standing in opposition with nearly every other veterans organization and advocating for extreme right-wing policies that hurt our nation’s heroes.

Over the summer, Bridge Project teamed up with VoteVets to put out a report on the shady group’s true intentions. (Check out the full report, The Veterans Group That Fights Against Veterans, here.)

Concerned Veterans for American operates under the auspices of promoting policies that are good for veterans and their families — but they’re really only interested in pushing […]

“Frugal” Rubio Spends Big Bucks To Impress Koch Brothers

October 16, 2015

With Scott Walker’s recent departure from the presidential race, Marco Rubio has been leaning in to his role as new Koch favorite. Rubio’s positions on ending the Ex-Im Bank, blocking a minimum wage increase, and pushing a tax plan that would give tax breaks to the top one percent mean that the Florida senator has been in the running for the Kochs’ invisible primary since its start.

In the past month, he’s taken on even more extracurricular Koch activities to impress the brothers. Earlier this week, the candidate held a town hall in Nevada with the Koch front group, the LIBRE Initiative. And next week he’ll do a town hall with another Koch front group, Concerned Veterans for America.

Now, it seems that the so-called “frugal” campaign that Rubio is running has been spending big bucks to get an in with the Kochs. According to Politico, the campaign “spent about $271,000 […]

Is Rubio The Kochs’ New Front-Runner?

October 7, 2015

Today, a new report claims Marco Rubio could be the new “front-runner” for the billionaire brothers’ “big prize,” a piece of the nearly $1 billion they’ve promised to spend on the 2016 election.

From the New York Daily News:

According to a political insider who ran into David Koch at a recent event in Manhattan, Florida Sen. Rubio is the front-runner for [the Kochs’] dough now that Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is out of the race….We’re also told that Koch had nothing but nice things to say about Rubio, with whom he agrees on “most of the substantial issues.”

We’re sure Marco Rubio is jumping for joy that David Koch has finally noticed that on “most of the substantial issues,” Rubio is willing to toe the Koch line.

For months, Rubio has taken every available opportunity to show his deep allegiance to the Kochs’ “libertarian” causes in hopes they’ll spend big on his campaign. […]

Top Puerto Rico Political Commentator Blasts Rubio For Siding With The Kochs Over Puerto Rico

September 8, 2015

On Friday, just hours before he campaigned in Puerto Rico, Marco Rubio sided with the billionaire Koch brothers in opposing the fair treatment of Puerto Rico under Chapter 9 of the U.S. Bankruptcy code.

Now, Rubio is facing criticism from one of Puerto Rico’s most influential political commentators, Jay Fonseca. In a Facebook post, Fonseca blasts Rubio (translated by Bridge Project):

“I hope you’ve enjoyed yourself in my island, and that you had fun with the money you received only so you could later tell us that you don’t believe in lending a hand to your Latino brothers who live here. This senator from Florida, Marco Rubio, came to Puerto Rico as part of his bid for the U.S. presidency as the Republican nominee. The most hilarious part is, the guy came to the island without previously announcing his position on helping PR file for Chapter 9 protections under the federal bankruptcy code. And […]

Veterans Groups Concerned With Trump Tapping the Koch Network for VA Leadership

December 1, 2016

Trump and his transition team continue to rely on the Koch Network to staff their administration. Trump is looking to the Kochs’ Concerned Veterans for America to shape the Department of Veterans Affairs:

Trump met with VA Secretary contender Pete Hegseth who is a former president and chief executive of CVA
CVA has previously worked closely with retiring Rep. Jeff Miller who is also under consideration for VA Secretary
Senior CVA Advisor and author of a report on turning the VA into a nonprofit corporation Darin Selnick serves on the Trump’s transition team
Former CVA Advisor Amber Smith also serves on Trump’s transition team

CVA’s leadership under Trump would allow them to enact their policy goal of privatizing the VA despite polls indicating that two-thirds of veterans oppose the Kochs’ plan. Traditional veterans service organizations are becoming alarmed by growing influence CVA has in the Trump administration and what it might mean for the care […]

Joe Heck’s Big Oil Koch Cash

October 11, 2016

Joe Heck’s Senate campaign has received an unprecedented level of support from the Koch brothers’ political machine, including over $7 million in negative advertising from Freedom Partners Action Fund and the first instance of the Kochs’ LIBRE Initiative “explicitly backing” a candidate. In return, Heck has been a loyal puppet, consistently supporting the Kochs’ interests at the expense of environmental protections and the development of clean energy jobs in Nevada. While preaching steadfast opposition to “crony capitalism,” the Kochs have an interest in preserving tax breaks for big oil, an interest unsurprisingly protected by Heck.

Joe Heck, fearing backlash from his wealthy patrons, has taken every available opportunity to undermine clean energy in Nevada–arguing that the government should “get out of the business” of investing in renewables–while protecting government subsidies for fossil fuels. There’s no question that Heck would continue his fight against renewable energy in the United States Senate.

Koch VA Privatization Group Spends Big For Their Florida Puppet

September 28, 2016

The Koch brothers just launched a six-figure digital ad buy in part on behalf of their favorite Florida puppet, Senator Marco Rubio. An overwhelming majority of veterans are opposed to having their healthcare system privatized but that hasn’t stopped the Koch brothers and their sham front group Concerned Veterans for America (CVA) from trying to cut and privatize the VA.

Rubio is getting Koch money because the brothers know that he’ll champion their anti-seniors and working families, pro-Big Oil agenda in the Senate.

Two weeks ago, the Kochs announced that Concerned Veterans for America, Generation Opportunity, and LIBRE Initiative, will each be consolidated under the Kochs’ flagship Americans for Prosperity group. That tells you all you need to know about the Kochs’ latest CVA intervention for Rubio.

American Bridge Vice President Eddie Vale issued the following statement on the Kochs’ latest intervention for their favorite Floridian puppet:

“This isn’t about veterans issues; the […]

Kochs Admit Front Groups Are Politically-Purposed Shams

September 19, 2016

Last week, the Kochs effectively admitted what we’ve argued for years: their supposedly non-partisan “constituency groups” are in reality fronts for promoting the brothers’ selfish agenda and buying off their puppet politicians.
By announcing the consolidation of the groups under the Americans for Prosperity banner, the Kochs are conceding that the LIBRE Initiative, Concerned Veterans for America, and Generation Opportunity, have always been partisan shams, despite the organizations’ persistent claims to the contrary.

The reshuffling won’t take place until after the election. In the meantime, the Kochs are using their “non-partisan” groups to funnel millions to their favorite puppets — most recently, in Floridaon behalf of Marco Rubio. But it isn’t just Florida; Americans for Prosperity and Koch front groups are ramping up their ground game investments to boost Donald Trump and down-ballot Republicans across the country, from Pennsylvania to Nevada.

Kochs Ground Game Push Shows They Aren’t Slowing Their 2016 Spending

September 16, 2016

The Koch brothers aren’t slowing down thier efforts to get out the Republican vote — even if that means helping elect Donald Trump. Earlier this week, the Koch political machine tried to make it seem like they are slowing down their election spending, a laughable claim.

The truth is that the Kochs haven’t stopped spending because of Trump at all — they’re even making up for his campaign’s deficits. In August, the Kochs had already poured millions into protectingvulnerable GOP senators and candidates in Florida, Indiana, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin to name a few. Now, they’re ramping up their ground game, “spending $250 million” this year and focusing on “get-out-the-vote efforts targeting 5 million” voters.

The Kochs can claim that they don’t like Trump, but as long as they’re spending millions to elect Republicans and making up for his disastrous ground-game, they are key players in the Party of Trump. […]

Kochs Continue To Ramp Up Senate Spending

August 10, 2016

The Kochs may not be thrilled with the top of the GOP ticket, but that won’t stop them from building a coalition to elect their political puppets down the ballot (and if that helps out Donald Trump along the way, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯).

According to The Hill, the Koch brothers and their political front groups have “already spent more than $24 million in Senate races and [made] advertising reservations for the fall totaling at least $42 million.” They’ve signaled their support for vulnerable Republicans in Nevada, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida, among others, and plan to make a buy in North Carolina.

Take a look at how over the past couple of weeks the Koch network has invested in each state to insure the Senate and the House is full of people who will do the brothers’ bidding, even if it hurts the voters who elected them:

Out Of Options, Koch-Backed Club For Growth Bets On Ted Cruz

March 24, 2016

Out of options, the Charles and David Koch-backed Club for Growth just endorsed settled for Ted Cruz. The Kochs have for months been agonizing over the reality that they can’t buy Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump’s loyalty with campaign contributions. Hoping that someone — anyone — other than Ted Cruz would emerge as a viable challenger, Charles and David have thus far held off from getting involved in the race. Now, it looks like they’re settling — and hoping that they can somehow get Cruz into the White House where he’ll be sure to advance their selfish agenda.

Club for Growth has over the last several years benefited from at least $1.9 million from Koch groups. The organization received $924,000 from the Koch-linked Center to Protect Patient Rights from 2009-2012. And Club for Growth benefited from a massive $1,000,000 contribution from Freedom Partners in 2014, alone. As far as 2015 Koch contributions to Club for Growth? We […]

Is Ron DeSantis The Koch Brothers’ Joni Ernst 2.0?

February 1, 2016

In 2014, the Kochs’ political machine helped propel a then-unknown state senator to victory in the Iowa Senate race — Joni Ernst. The billionaires saw something in Ernst that convinced them she should be their newest puppet in the U.S. Senate. Now, it looks like the Kochs have turned their attention to another competitive senate race, this time in Florida.

With Marco Rubio’s presidential fate still undecided, the Kochs are faced with losing one of their best shills in the Senate. So it’s no surprise that over the weekend Ron DeSantis won an invite to the Koch donor conference:

With such a crowded Republican field in the race to replace Rubio, it’s too soon to know how things will shake out. The Kochs have placed their bets and are clearly planning to run their 2014 Iowa playbook. But voters would do well to remember — no […]
