What Else Are The Kochs Hiding, If They Don’t Think This Merits An Apology?

January 21, 2016

A shocking, suppressed chapter in Koch family history was brought to light last week: Charles and David’s father, Fred Koch, helped build the “third-largest oil refinery in the Third Reich, a critical industrial cog in Hitler’s war machine” — a facility that Adolf Hitler personally approved.

As first reported by the New York Times, previewing revelations from Jane Mayer’s “Dark Money,” the Koch Industries founder’s ties to Nazi Germany are notably absent from the company’s otherwise-exhaustive official history. As details surrounding Koch’s German joint-project with Nazi-sympathizer William Rhodes Davis have continued to emerge, the omission has become increasingly understandable.

These are the four takeaways:

The Koch family fortune was in-part “built with contracts from the authoritarian regimes of Nazi Germany and the USSR.”

Koch patriarch Fred C. Koch, himself involved in the founding of the far right-wing John Birch Society, collaborated with Nazi-sympathizer William Rhodes Davis to build a Hitler-approved […]

New Ads On Declassified Docs The Kochs Don’t Want You To See Target Koch Employees

January 18, 2016

After the shocking revelation that the Kochs’ fortune has its origins in a refinery their father, Fred Koch, built for the Nazis, the Koch brothers have tried to diminish their family’s involvement with the regime. But declassified military files may have just made that impossible.

According to the files, unlike the Kochs have claimed, Koch construction contributed a substantial amount to the facility, building a a “cracking unit” that had “a capacity of 360,000 tons of oil per year… the [German company] Borsig unit was rated at just half that amount.”

Today, Bridge Project is introducing a digital ad campaign featuring the declassified files and the Kochs. The ads will run in Wichita, KS area, and target Koch network allies and political influencers.

“The Kochs have a long history of deceiving the public about their policies and motives, but this deception shows the depths of their shamelessness,” said American Bridge Vice President Eddie Vale. “Koch Industries needs […]

Let’s Talk About The Kochs’ Sham “Well-Being” Initiatives

January 18, 2016

We need to talk about Charles and David Koch’s politically-motivated “well-being” outreach. A new report form The New Yorker’s Jane Mayer exposes it for what it is: A PR-motivated sham that targets and disingenuously manipulates America’s poor, all while indoctrinating them with “values” in line with the Kochs’ self-enriching agenda.

Public Relations Sham

First some background, from Politico’s Ken Vogel. To begin with, there’s the PR angle: “Inside the network,” Vogel says, “the well-being initiatives are viewed as a legacy project for Charles Koch and his longtime lieutenant Rich Fink.” That’s not surprising. In the past we’ve written extensively about the Kochs shameless PR maneuvering and “legacy building.” (Some examples: This; and this; and this; and this; and this; and this; and this; also: this.)

Political Motivations

But the Koch “well-being” initiatives are about more than a relatively-harmless white-washing of their shadowy history. They’re also about disingenuously convincing the poor […]

New book on the Kochs outlines their decades long, “multi-pronged campaign” to advance their agenda

January 17, 2016

A new review from The Guardian calls Jane Mayer’s new book out this week on the Koch brothers and other wealthy donors on the far right an “indispensable new history ‘of the billionaires behind the rise of the radical right’ in America.”

In his review,Charles Kaiser outlines the Kochs’ multi-part plan decades in the making to advance their self-enriching, far-right political agenda:

WaPo: New Book On The Kochs Based On A “Confidential History” Commissioned By Bill Koch

January 15, 2016

Washington Post review of Jane Mayer’s new book on the Koch brothers includes even more new, bombastic details on the Kochs’ family history and political network:

A major source of Mayer’s book is a “confidential history” commissioned by Bill Koch on “Charles Koch’s effort to shape American politics.”
Fred Koch and Charles Koch were raised by a Nazi governess (don’t miss those details below).
“Mayer’s book is so deeply researched and studded with detail that it seems destined to rattle the Koch executive offices in Wichita.”
“A 1982 sealed deposition from Bill Koch, for example, describes how Charles and David attempted to blackmail their brother Frederick by threatening to reveal to their father his alleged homosexual preferences unless Frederick turned over his shares in the family business.”
“Two former prosecutors and an FBI agent told Mayer they suspected they were targets of Koch Industries’ private espionage efforts while they were investigating the company for alleged misdeeds.”
The […]

“Persuasive, Timely And Necessary” — New Details From Jane Mayer’s Book On The Kochs

January 13, 2016

The Kochs’ fortune has allowed them to control much about their world, unfortunately they can’t hide the complete truth about their history and agenda. Out next week, a new book on the Kochs by the New Yorker’s Jane Mayer, Dark Money, is already picking up praise in a new review.

The New York Times calls the book “a persuasive, timely and necessary story of the Koch brothers’ empire.“ Here are some of our favorite highlights from the review:

The Kochs’ first and foremost interest is in their own bottom line. They’ve manipulated the Republican Party for their benefit

“To protect their investments in coal and oil pipelines and refineries (somewhat pared down in the last decade), the Koch brothers have, Ms. Mayer points out, funded think tanks committed to raising doubt about climate change. They have also spent tens of millions of dollars to roll back environmental regulations and defund or abolish the federal agencies that […]

New Bridge Project ads target David Koch’s apartment building

January 13, 2016

Check out Bridge Project’s new digital ads targeted to DC and NYC influencers (plus David Koch’s ritzy apartment building) raising awareness of how the Koch brothers’ father, Fred Koch, built a Nazi oil plant that Hitler personally approved.

While it took 24 hours for the Koch PR machine to come up with a response to the new report that their fortune has roots in Nazi Germany — and their six paragraphs admit to building a Nazi oil plant — Koch Industries should apologize for their past work with the Nazis like other companies have done. Until they do, Republicans should think long and hard before they take their cash and push their self-enriching agenda.

Nazis, the Ryan budget, blackmail & more: 5 big pieces of news in new Koch book preview

January 12, 2016

The NY Times got an early copy of Jane Mayer’s new book on the Kochs, Dark Money, and even in the short preview there’s some big news — the Kochs’ ties to the Nazis, blackmail within the brothers, bankrolling an effort to make the Ryan budget “more palatable,” and more. Check out five big pieces of news below, read the full NY Times piece here, and stay tuned for more from the new book next week.

1. Charles and David Koch’s father, Fred Koch’s, early business success has roots in Nazi Germany (and Stalin’s Soviet Union, too). Earlier this year, Charles highlighted his commitment to advancing his father’s values and touted that he hangs a portrait of him and letter from him in in his office. Don’t miss the Washington Post’s addition of the “fervent Nazi” governess that cared for the older Koch brothers when they were children.

Kochs Caught Placing Generic, Misleading Op-ed In Papers In 35+ States

January 8, 2016

We’ve come to expect Charles and David Koch to mislead, misrepresent, and even flat-out lie to advance their selfish agenda. And it’s not uncommon for the Kochs to try to use op-eds as vehicles for their misinformation campaigns. But it’s not every day that they get caught placing the same generic, misleading op-ed in newspapers in over 35 states…

Alaska Dispatch News reporter and columnist Dermot Cole caught Charles and David in the act — and he isn’t amused:

I think Alaskans can figure this out without the phony resolution and the fill-in-the-blank advice.

Charles Koch Attacks The One GOP Candidate He Doesn’t Control: Trump

January 8, 2016

In a Financial Times interview out today, Charles Koch goes on the attack against the only GOP Presidential candidate that the Kochs don’t control, Donald Trump.

I ask about the rhetorical turn the race has taken when it comes to dealing with Islamist terror, and about Trump’s assertion that the US could require all Muslims in the country to register with the government.

“Well, then you destroy our free society,” Koch says of the idea. “Who is it that said, ‘If you want to defend your liberty, the first thing you’ve got to do is defend the liberty of people you like the least’?”

He then expounds on the war on terror. “We have been doing this for a dozen years. We invaded Afghanistan. We invaded Iraq. Has that made us safer? Has that made the world safer? It seems like we’re more worried about it now than we were then, so we […]
