In the bombastic NRSC memo that surfaced yesterday, national Republicans admitted that Donald Trump continues to be popular because “he can’t be bought” by billionaire special interest donors.
National Republicans even encourage their candidates to advance Trump’s traits, but there lies a big problem for the GOP — each and every one of their Senate incumbents and candidates is bought by the billionaire Koch brothers. Trump himself has mocked candidates who seek Koch backing as “puppets” and research shows when voters learn candidates are backed by the Kochs, it’s an immediate turnoff
The Kochs have put millions behind their puppet candidates — and plan to spend even more in 2016 — to ensure that those who do their bidding for them remain in the U.S. Senate. And the Kochs have made it crystal clear — they “expect something in return.
- NEW HAMPSHIRE: : Already this cycle, the Koch brothers have spent $1.2 million propping up Senator Kelly Ayotte because they need her to continue doing their bidding in the U.S. Senate. And over the course of her career, the Kochs have given Senator Ayotte over $27,000 — including $4,500 last month — as an incentive for advancing their agenda in the Senate. This isn’t even counting a fundraiser David Koch personally headlined for Ayotte in October. During her time in Washington, Senator Ayotte has eagerly done what’s best for the billionaire brothers including opposing raising the minimum wage, protecting tens of billions of dollars in special tax breaks for big oil companies, voting to roll back Wall Street reform, and more.
- OHIO: In Ohio, the Koch brothers have already spent $1.4 million to prop up Senator Rob Portman to reward him for advocating for the Koch-promoted pro-outsourcing agenda. But as polling reveals, “the Kochs’ attempts to influence Ohio voters has been ineffective.”
- PENNSYLVANIA: Senator Pat Toomey has championed the Kochs’ extreme, partisan agenda at the expense of Pennsylvania, putting billionaire special interests and Wall Street ahead of Pennsylvania’s middle class and working families including fighting to repeal Dodd-Frank, opposing raising the minimum wage, and siding with the Kochs on the Ex-Im Bank. And now the Kochs are doing everything they can to ensure that Senator Toomey gets reelected. Over the course of his career, Toomey’s campaign has taken $18,000 from Koch PAC — including $7,500 this cycle. And the Kochs’ veterans front group, Concerned Veterans for America, has already spent over $1 million propping up Senator Toomey.
- WISCONSIN: Senator Ron Johnson — who’s been described as the Kochs’ “model legislator” — has taken upwards of $30,000 from Koch Industries and dutifully advanced their selfish agenda in the U.S. Senate. And Charles and David have taken note — the two brothers “are sure to support his reelection,” according to Politico.
- NEVADA: Just last month, Congressman Joe Heckpulled in $2,500 from Koch PAC — bringing his career total over $32,000. And in Congress, Rep. Heck hasn’t hesitated on siding with the Kochs over Nevada — including joining the Kochs in attacking public lands, earning him high marks on AFP Nevada’s scorecard.
- MISSOURI: In October, David Koch personally headlined a New York City fundraiser for Senator Roy Blunt, in addition to cutting him another $5,000 check from Koch PAC. It’s easy to see why Senator Blunt is in the front of the Kochs’ minds — he has stood with the Kochs over Missouri families time and time again including opposing raising the minimum wage, protecting tens of billions of dollars in special tax breaks for big oil companies, voting to roll back Wall Street reform, and more.
